Who is this Guy?
by Slidin Fast inthe ra is underway and there is a common thread through the first day.
they have a "presenter" who comes across as an educated historian handling early bible fragments and translations as if he knows what he's doing.
the impression given is that he is an unassailable font of all knowledge, with his rich scottish accent he prints himself as across as professor gravitas.. i find this disturbing, we have no idea who he is or what if any his qualifications are to speak such with authority.

I remember how huge swathes of the book were based on a work called 'The Two Babylons" by The Rev Alexander Hislop. This was a wild-eyed rant linking everything about the Catholic with lots of juicy paganism. The chief baddy as I remember was Nimrod and phalic symbols abounded. Freddy France of course lapped it up. He was absolutely hooked on the Rev Alexander. we bathed in the shock horror of all the connections.
It was only in the last third of the door stop book that it started on the crazy interpretation of Revelation. What a ball ache.
Just another thought, I believe that a lot of the superstitious connections are still current light. Basically if it's nice it's pagan. All based on the good Rev and his rantings.

Graham Carmichael--a cheerful Scotsman who was partial to a drink or 10
Yep, he was a character. Worked with him at a convention once. he described the situation once as "quiet as a contribution box", made me smile. Talked about his Glasgow upbringing. "they would steal your front door and sell it you round the back".

Atlantis, I don't know what I'm going to do with it but I now seem to have the whole 2024 RC program warts, tumours and all in my computer. Thanks mate, a big sticky bun to you with your coffee this morning.
The question is, will its toxicity melt my hard disc and gum up my key board. Only time will tell.

Do JWs Get Excited About WT Publications Any More?
by NotFormer inmemory from long ago: my old mate from high school lived next door to a jw and was often "treated" to the latest jw literature.
when the "you can live forever in paradise on earth"* book came out, this neighbour waxed lyrical about how good this book was and how powerful the message was.
he acted really keen about it, like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

The last time I got excited about a WT publication was in 1998. I bought a case of "Truth" books at "pioneer rate" at an assembly when they were released. They were like gold dust then, you could flog them like hot pies. Never had better placements or more money in my pocket as a pio. You could start studies like shelling peas. It almost seemed worthwhile at that time..
Then came 1975.
